Perry Local Schools, Massilon, Ohio
Return
S.O.S., Inc. installed a fiber-optic backbone that connects Perry Local School's three main buildings together over a distance of approximately 4,000 feet. Perry's entire Local School District is connected with communications between the Board of Education, the high school, middle schools, and all of the elementary schools. There are two network servers running Novell 3.11 with a variety of wiring topologies, all ethernet, but either 10-Base-T, coax BNC, or fiber-optic internal and external to the buildings. The File Servers are 486 EISA 32 MB Systems. Approximately 87 workstations are connected and have access to the Stark County A-site through a synchronous link from the Novell network to the SPX-50 through the lease lines to a VAX VMS System. The protocol used is TCP/IP on the Vax and the Novell network, with VT320 emulation running through Ethernet.
Any platform can be reached through menu options on the systems: a one-key stroke approach to applications. The windows software resides on the servers and can be accessed by any network in the district. Applications run from Windows or DOS, all transparent to the user. The A-Site runs the accounting and school records applications which are accessed through the lease line as a menu choice on the Novell network. Novell networks are backed up from one location by a 2 Gigabyte tape that runs automatically at a user assigned time. This Novell network scenario is like clockwork and is a joy to operate: a must see! Return.
