The Novell network at Union Eye Care is connected to a UNIX server running a point-of-sale software package interfacing with Union Eye Care's 17 other locations. The ethernet wiring topology extends through the office on level 5 wiring connecting to 10-Base-T hubs. Loaded on the Novell server is a NFS gateway to the UNIX server. This gateway allows the users on the Novell side to look at the UNIX server files as a volume on the network. There is no need for downloading of files. The software package merely accesses the databases on the UNIX side and updates the appropriate indexes if changes are made in an add, edit, or delete mode.
This seamless meshing of dissimilar platforms, makes this Novell system network topology unique and accommodating. All of the units used are 386 and 486 PCs running under the multiuser NetWare system or the UNIX multitasking operating system. Communications are setup with modems to the other stores for polling of data to the UNIX and Novell system. Return.
